Being Properly Insured

As an agency owner, I receive questions daily concerning the importance of General Liability coverage for the small business owner. The temptation is to view insurance as a requirement instead of a necessity. Many business owners send me the insurance requirement from their contracts and request the minimum coverage for compliance.

It can be a dangerous thing to be in business without the proper insurance coverage.

A few years ago I was riding on a lake with a friend. The conversation, as it often does for me, found its way to the topic of insurance. My friend expressed a common perception of insurance being a “racket” for insurance companies to make a lot of money. He felt as if he has wasted an incredible amount of money on insurance premiums over the years. I just listened as he vented. We came around a bend in the shoreline to find a nice houseboat with a large fallen tree across it. The boat was completely destroyed.  Before he knew it and without thinking, my friends commented on how he hoped “they had that boat properly insured.”

Here’s my advice: Be properly insured but not overly so.  Make sure you have enough coverage to allow you to continue your current lifestyle and function if the “worst” happens. This is the purpose of insurance after all.
